Shipping Rate Calculator – Customer Rate vs Carrier Cost by Weight and Country, with Free-Shipping Threshold Simulator (Excel)

Enter your carrier rate table by weight tier and country; the file returns cost, price and margin per shipment and simulates free-shipping thresholds. Shipping is the cost item that quietly eats margins: a flat rate that is right for a 1 kg parcel to Germany is wrong for 5 kg to Spain. This calculator keeps your carrier’s rate table in one place and tells you, for any weight and destination, what you pay, what you charge and what is left.

What is inside (5 sheets): Rate Tiers (carrier cost by weight tier and country, 100 rows ready) · Calculator (choose weight and country: cost, customer rate, margin per shipment, warning if the tier is not found) · Free Shipping Threshold (simulate thresholds, e.g. free above €99: share of orders affected, cost of free shipping, average margin per order, 3 charts) · Settings · Home.

Who it is for: online stores shipping to several countries or weight classes, anyone negotiating with a carrier or a shipping platform, stores deciding their free-shipping policy.

How to use it: paste your carrier’s rates into Rate Tiers, then use the Calculator and the threshold simulator. Described in chapter 10 of the guide Level Up Your E-commerce.

How to work with the template, step by step

Shipping Rate Calculator compares what you charge the customer with what the carrier charges you, by weight tier and country, and simulates a free-shipping threshold.

  1. Enter the carrier rates in Rate Tiers. Enter your carrier’s rates by weight tier and destination country, including fuel surcharge and extras, as negotiated in your contract.
  2. Check the margin in the Calculator. Choose weight and country: the sheet retrieves the carrier cost and calculates the margin against the rate you charge the customer. A negative margin means you are losing money on shipping for that tier/country.
  3. Simulate the free-shipping threshold. In Free Shipping Threshold enter average order value and orders per month: the sheet estimates orders above the threshold, the monthly cost of free shipping and the extra revenue from the threshold effect, comparing alternative thresholds.

Linked to chapters 10 (shipping) and 12 (operating costs) of the guide: shipping cost as a share of revenue is one of the twelve ratios to monitor. This edition comes without sheet protection: edit the input cells and leave the formula cells as they are.
