This budget template has input options and real-time updates that offer a dynamic forecast approach to budgeting by regularly updating the financial projections based on actuals and the latest data, which allows businesses to stay responsive to market fluctuations and adjust their budgetary allocations accordingly. It’s a simple monthly budget template for one year, where the user can enter revenues and expenses line by line, CAPEX, and forecast the rest based on simple assumptions.
Why Use this Template?
The monthly budgeting template (with financial statements) provides a deeper understanding of the company’s liquidity and financial health beyond traditional Profit and Loss (P&L) budgeting. While P&L focuses on revenue and expenses, cash flow budgeting tracks the actual movement of cash in and out of the business. This is important for business owners as it provides them more visibility to anticipate cash shortages or surpluses, enabling better management of working capital, debt obligations, and investment decisions. By considering cash inflows and outflows, businesses can ensure they have sufficient funds to cover expenses, seize growth opportunities, and navigate unforeseen challenges, fostering a more sustainable and financially resilient operation.
The Excel model template provides the following:
Instructions and Terms contain the cell color codes, objectives, and instructions on how to work with the model. It also includes the terms and abbreviations used to get the user familiarized with the terms used in the model.
The model includes Assumptions for the following:
- General Settings – Set the currency and forecast year
- Depreciation Period – Input the company’s depreciation period for each asset classification whenever applicable
- Net Working Capital – Input the company’s desired cash conversion (Receivables, Inventory and Payables)
- Interest – Input interest rate on a loan whenever applicable
The Budget sheet includes an input option for Budget/Actual figures, forecast year, and first budget month. This sheet also includes three statement financial statements and other supporting schedules listed below.
- Income Statement – Allows the user to input prior year or year zero data as a starting point. Then, populate the monthly budget from Months 1 to 12. The user can then change the actual results as they go forward and adjust their monthly forecast if necessary.
- Balance Sheet – Allows the user to populate prior year or year zero data as a starting point. Then, the numbers are automatically calculated from the income statement and other schedules. It also has an input option for other current assets and current liabilities whenever applicable.
- Cash Flows – Provides the user with a clear and detailed picture of the company’s cash inflows and outflows, helping stakeholders understand how cash moves in and out of the business. It comes with an input option for additional equity and dividend payment whenever required. It also requires forecasting the balance sheet-relevant financial ratios.
- Financial Ratios – The model also comes with financial ratios useful for analyzing and interpreting a company’s financial statements. They provide a quantitative means to assess various aspects of a company’s performance, financial health, efficiency, etc. These ratios are calculated using data from the company’s income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement.
- Break-even Analysis – Automatically calculated from the income statement, which helps users to make strategic pricing decisions with a clear understanding of their break-even point and optimize cost structures to maximize profitability.
- Debt Schedule – Allows the user to monitor interest payments and repayment plans. It also allows the user to enter actual interest paid or calculate based on the embedded interest rate.
- Fixed Asset Schedule – Seamlessly manage fixed assets, depreciation, and capital expenditures. The CAPEX schedule allows the user to input capital expenditures acquired during the year.
Summary sheet allows the user to visualize their monthly revenue and EBITDA trends with these easy-to-interpret graphs. These graphs will automatically be updated once the Budget and Assumption sheets are populated.
