A Gantt chart helps to create and monitor a project schedule. It is designed as a vertical bar chart depicting time intervals for every project task.
The attached file contains a Gantt chart created in Excel. In addition to assigning the tasks to time intervals, it tells who the owner of every task is, the task’s importance, and its completion status.
The tasks in the chart can be grouped into two categories, distinguished by color.
In addition to practical use, this file is a good example of several Excel features.
First, after studying this file, you will become familiar with such Excel functions as TODAY, WEEKDAY, WEEKNUM, MONTH, EOMONTH, DAY, and others.
Second, the file makes extensive use of conditional formatting. In particular, it is used to:
- Highlight time intervals in different colors. Principal tasks are colored darker red, and detailed sub-tasks are lighter red
- Indicate weekends and public holidays. There is a table underneath where you can put public holidays in your country, and the chart will take into account those holidays and weekends
- Mark today’s date with a vertical dashed line. This is convenient for monitoring the completion status
- Demonstrate priority and completion status with icons
The file relies on standard Excel functions and conditional formatting. It does not use macros. It is flexible to change and can be adjusted to your specific requirements if needed.
