FILM PRODUCTION & STREAMING FINANCIAL MODEL | 10-YEAR EDITION
Production Budget. Distribution Receipts. Recoupment. Investor Returns.
Connect the commercial and financing decisions of an independent film in one editable Excel project model.
Track production expenses, staged funding, theatrical and streaming rights, global licensing receipts, senior financing obligations and priority investor distributions across ten annual forecast periods.
Developed for independent producers, production companies, film-finance consultants, entertainment analysts and professionals evaluating single-film investment cases.
All supplied commercial assumptions, financial figures and projected investment returns are fictional examples.
📊 EXECUTIVE DASHBOARD & EIGHT NATIVE CHARTS
The dedicated executive dashboard presents eight model-linked performance indicators:
Production Budget, Budget vs Actual, Funding Surplus/Gap, Gross Collected Receipts, Producer Net Receipts, Investor Capital Recoupment, Investor IRR and Investor MOIC.
Eight native Excel charts visualize annual receipts, investor cash flows, release-window revenue mix, production-stage budget variances, capital and premium distributions, senior loan and minimum-guarantee balances, project liquidity and distribution economics.
The dashboard connects financial results with the selected operating scenario.
🎬 PRODUCTION BUDGET & RELEASE PLANNING
Configure 15 illustrative production cost lines across development, principal production, post-production and launch activities.
Each cost item includes an editable planned budget, manually entered actual cost, timing offset and an optional release-sensitive scheduling control.
Analyze production budget variances and annual expenditure requirements.
Actual costs are illustrative comparison inputs, not a live accounting integration.
🌍 GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION & STREAMING REVENUE
Model fifteen preconfigured commercial rights and territory positions.
The sample portfolio includes theatrical distribution across North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Latin America, together with global SVOD, AVOD and TVOD rights, television licensing, airline distribution, soundtrack income and merchandise/IP revenue.
Customize each position’s commercial assumptions, collection yield, distribution commission, revenue-window timing and collection decay.
The annual collection engine accounts for receipts falling outside the ten-year forecast.
Streaming revenue represents film-rights licensing and sales. This is not a streaming-platform subscription or customer-cohort model.
💼 SOURCES, USES & FINANCING
Plan a capital structure incorporating external investor equity, producer equity, senior secured financing, a distributor minimum guarantee and non-recoupable grants or incentives.
Configure commitment amounts and financing draw proportions across the first two forecast years.
Review total sources against projected production uses and investigate any financing gap.
A separate annual cash-flow forecast helps distinguish total committed funding from actual cash availability.
🏦 PRIORITY RECOUPMENT WATERFALL
The workbook implements a structured annual cash-allocation sequence.
Collected receipts first cover applicable distributor and collection-agent fees, followed by distributor-funded release-expense recovery.
Remaining cash is applied to senior loan interest and principal, distributor minimum-guarantee recovery, and pro-rata repayment of external-investor and producer equity.
After principal recovery, the model allocates a flat external-investor preferred premium, then distributes residual participation between investors and producers, including the modeled talent royalty on the producer’s backend.
Unpaid balances carry forward within the modeled waterfall.
The preferred premium is a flat percentage of investor contributions rather than a compounded annual preferred return.
Actual distribution agreements may establish a different contractual priority structure.
📈 INVESTOR RETURNS & INVESTMENT PERFORMANCE
Review the external-investor class through annual cash contributions, principal recovery, preferred premium and backend distributions.
Key measures include Investor IRR, Investor NPV, MOIC, cumulative investor cash flow and principal recoupment.
The supplied fictional Base Case produces approximately 12.95% Investor IRR and 1.46x MOIC.
At the illustrative 14% discount rate, Investor NPV is approximately negative USD 108,189.
A positive IRR therefore does not necessarily indicate that the modeled investment exceeds its selected discount-rate threshold.
IRR uses equally spaced annual cash flows, not transaction-date XIRR. The workbook’s NPV convention discounts the entire annual cash-flow series beginning in period one.
🔄 FOUR EDITABLE SCENARIOS
Explore Base, Upside, Downside and Stress.
Scenario assumptions address release delays, theatrical receipts, streaming income, licensing revenue, ancillary rights and production costs.
The active scenario updates the connected receipts, waterfall, liquidity and investor-return calculations.
The SCENARIO LAB worksheet provides an additional indicative comparison of pre-financing commercial economics. It does not calculate four complete investor waterfalls simultaneously.
✅ MODEL CHECKS & LIQUIDITY WARNINGS
Built-in checks review receipt segmentation, cash-allocation conservation, investor capital movements, financing balances and project cash-flow reconciliation.
The Base Case demonstrates internally consistent results under the implemented controls.
Structural reconciliation does not certify project economics, distribution contracts or financing availability.
The model does not automatically raise replacement capital for cash deficits or force all outstanding obligations to be settled at the end of the forecast.
