The most expensive mistake is starting with half the capital you need. This planner puts on one page what it costs to open an online store (platform, web agency, photos, legal and tax setup, initial stock, advertising), what it costs to keep it open every month, and how many orders and months you need to get your money back.
What is inside (3 sheets): Startup Budget (one-off costs and recurring monthly costs, with totals and the capital needed including the first months of ad spend) · Break-Even (unit margin, expected monthly orders, fixed costs → break-even orders, break-even revenue, months to recover the investment; conservative / base / optimistic scenarios and a 12-month projection; 5 charts) · Home.
Who it is for: anyone about to open an online store, or adding e-commerce to a physical business; advisers and accountants preparing a first business plan.
How to use it: fill in the yellow cells, compare the three scenarios, write the break-even date down. Described in chapter 2 of the guide Level Up Your E-commerce; the companion file for a store already running is ProfitBoard Pro.
How to work with the template, step by step
Before you launch: how much does it cost to open the store, and how many months does it take to recover the investment? Three steps.
- Enter the launch costs in Startup Budget. In the yellow cells enter one-off costs (platform setup, web agency, photos, initial stock, legal) and the recurring monthly costs (subscriptions, advertising, tools).
- Enter margin and expected sales in Break-Even. Average unit margin and expected monthly orders: the sheet calculates the break-even point in units and the months needed to recover the initial investment. If the result is “Not breaking even”, monthly fixed costs exceed the margin generated: review price, costs or volumes.
- Compare scenarios. Change price, margin or volumes and watch the months to break-even move: it is the quickest way to see which assumption matters most.
Designed for those starting from scratch (chapter 2 of the guide, Your starting point); once the store is live, ProfitBoard Pro takes over with the real monthly figures. This edition comes without sheet protection: edit the input cells and leave the formula cells as they are.
