What this study delivers
The Japan beverage manufacturing market is roughly ¥5 trillion at retail and produces approximately 5.4 billion litres of soft drinks annually. This study covers the four sub-segments user-confirmed in scope: RTD coffee (Suntory BOSS, Coca-Cola Georgia, Asahi Wonda, Kirin Fire, UCC, Pokka, DyDo, Tully’s), RTD tea (Itoen Oi Ocha, Coca-Cola Ayataka, Suntory Iyemon, Kirin Gogo no Kocha, Itoen TEAs TEA), bottled water (Suntory Tennensui, Coca-Cola iLohas, Kirin Volvic, Otsuka Crystal Geyser), and functional beverages (Otsuka Pocari Sweat and Oronamin C, Taisho Lipovitan-D, Aquarius, Red Bull Japan, Monster Japan, Kirin iMUSE, Yakult).
Key findings
- RTD tea is the largest sub-segment at approximately 30% of soft-drinks volume; Itoen Oi Ocha leads with 33–37% share of RTD green tea.
- Export growth is the structural narrative. Japan tea exports grew +16% volume / +25% value in 2024. Itoen overseas grew 60% in Q1 FY2025 (North America +44%). JEEPA tariff elimination on green tea (in force February 2019) underpins the export run.
- Climate-driven tea-supply shock is the most material 2026–2031 supply-side risk. Kyoto Uji tencha production fell 40% (hand-picked first flush) and 18% (machine first flush) in 2025; Shizuoka lost its 60-year #1 position to Kagoshima; matcha prices rose approximately 180% year on year.
- Regulatory levers concentrate at 2026. The 15% rPET certification under the METI Plastic Resource Recycling Promotion Act 2022 is effective January 24, 2026. The Consumer Affairs Agency reforms after the Kobayashi red yeast rice incident (finalised August 23, 2024) phase in GMP enforcement for supplement-format FFCs from September 1, 2026.
- Functional segment regulatory reform favours scale operators. The FFC market reached ¥686.5 bn in 2023; 1,584 new FFCs were notified between April 2024 and March 2025. Otsuka (Pocari Sweat / Oronamin C), Yakult, Kirin (plasma lactic acid bacteria), and Taisho (Lipovitan-D) are positioned to consolidate sub-scale FFC originators.
Three-scenario probability-weighted framework — Bear 25% / Base 55% / Bull 20% for 2026–2031, with named drivers for each scenario and quantified impacts on each sub-segment.

Methodology
Senior-analyst-led research grounded in primary regulator data (METI, MAFF, CAA, Bank of Japan), industry-association statistics (JSDA), and reconciled headline numbers across at least three major-publisher sources where consensus diverges. Three-scenario 2026–2031 framework with explicit probability weights reflecting analyst judgment on regulatory trajectory, climate-tea supply, JPY trajectory, and demographic decline — NOT statistical-model outputs.
