Why this study
US consumer fintech is a ~US$67 billion market in 2026 growing toward ~US$135 billion by 2031, and the mobile app is now how tens of millions of Americans bank, pay, invest and borrow. But the sector is four distinct monetization engines – neobanking, payments, investing and crypto, and buy-now-pay-later – now converging into a fifth, the super-app. This study decomposes how each engine actually earns money, why revenue is not the same as volume, and how the 2024-2026 regulatory wave reshapes the unit economics – the things a generic model gets wrong.
What you get
- A 36-page Word and PDF market study with 12 EFM-branded charts and 14 data tables.
- Monetization decomposed by model – interchange and net interest (neobank), take rate (payments), AUC yield and trading (investing), merchant discount and interest (BNPL).
- The super-app thesis – who can win, what the model looks like, and why breadth is not enough.
- A modeler’s base-case assumption set – ARPU, take rates, CAC and LTV, primary-account share, and AUC yield.
- The 2024-2026 regulation mapped to unit economics – the GENIUS Act, Section 1033 open banking, the BNPL rule, earned wage access, and interchange.
- Three scenarios to 2031 and a source-verification workbook with every figure cited and checked.
Key findings
- The market is large and mid-teens growth, concentrated in deeper monetization – ~US$66.8bn (2026) to ~US$135.4bn (2031), neobanking fastest at ~21% a year, mobile apps ~70% of access.
- Revenue is not volume – Venmo monetizes payment volume under 1%, Cash App ~3%, Klarna under 3% of GMV, Affirm ~9%, Robinhood ~1% of assets under custody. The model must follow the monetization engine, not the headline.
- User counts are not comparable – enrolled, accounts, monthly actives, funded accounts and members are different metrics, and conflating them is the most common sizing error.
- The super-app race is the structural story – Cash App, PayPal, SoFi and Revolut already offer 6-7 of 7 core money functions; the winner is decided by the primary-account relationship, not feature count.
- Regulation moved both ways in 2024-2026 – the GENIUS Act legitimized stablecoins and a nonbank charter path, while the CFPB pulled back on Section 1033, BNPL and earned wage access, changing the unit economics a model should assume.

Methodology
Built from Mordor Intelligence, company SEC filings and shareholder letters (SoFi, Robinhood, Coinbase, PayPal, Block, Affirm, Klarna, Chime), Early Warning Services, Business of Apps, ResearchAndMarkets, The Information and Crunchbase, and regulatory and legal sources including the CFPB, the OCC, the Federal Register and major law-firm analyses. Every claim, statistic, source and chart was reviewed and verified by the eFinancialModels editorial team. Forward-looking figures for 2026 to 2031 are eFinancialModels Base Case projections and are labeled as such; US fintech market-size estimates diverge by definition and are cited as a range. eFinancialModels uses AI-assisted research and drafting tools alongside human research and editorial review; we do not publish unverified content.
