Demand–Supply Outlook for Japanese Whisky, 2026–2031

By eFinancialModels Research · May 2026 · 37 pages · 12 charts · 30+ cited sources

Japanese whisky enters the 2026–2031 window in a defining transition. After a decade of breakneck expansion that lifted the operational distillery count from ten in 2008 to 118 by November 2025 and pushed export value to a record JPY 56 billion in 2022, the category absorbed three near-simultaneous shocks in 2023–2025: a China demand collapse that knocked high-end-spirits value down 28 percent in 2024, an inventory glut as the 2018–2022 expansion-era spirit reached its first release window into softer demand, and a 15 percent US import tariff imposed from 1 August 2025 under the US-Japan Strategic Trade & Investment Agreement.

This 37-page market study from eFinancialModels Research unpacks the structural foundations under the headline correction — the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association (JSLMA) 2021 Labeling Standards now in force, the JSLMA’s March 2025 Geographical Indication (GI) application, the Suntory + Nikka + Kirin operator base, and the ~100 craft distilleries that opened since Chichibu I in 2008 — and lays out a base-case path to JPY 60 billion export value by 2031 with explicit bear/base/bull scenarios.

Key findings

  • Export value down 12.8 percent in 2024. Japan whisky exports fell from JPY 50 billion in 2023 to JPY 43.7 billion in 2024 (Japan Customs). China softness and US-tariff anticipation drove the bulk of the move; the formal tariff took effect 1 August 2025.
  • 118 active distilleries by November 2025. From ten in 2008 to 118 active sites today (Japanese Whisky Dictionary). Approximately 100 of the 118 are craft / post-2008.
  • Secondary-market correction is tier-dependent. Mid-tier (Hibiki 21, Yamazaki 18) corrected 15–30 percent from 2022 peak; only 12 percent of mid-tier auction lots cleared in 2024 versus 68 percent of top-tier lots above GBP 25,000.
  • US tariff is the single largest 2026-2031 variable. 15 percent effective 1 August 2025, reduced from the 24 percent initially proposed. Representative producer EBIT index ranges 66–175 on a 2025=100 basis by 2031 across bear/base/bull scenarios.
  • JSLMA standards now enforced; GI in progress. The 2021 Labeling Standards came into force 1 April 2024 after a three-year transition. The JSLMA’s March 2025 GI application with the National Tax Agency is the most significant category-protection milestone since the standards were issued.
  • Suntory + Nikka anchor approximately 60 percent of category. Suntory ~23 percent global share, Nikka / Asahi ~19 percent (Spherical Insights). Approximately 100 craft distilleries hold the remaining capacity.
  • Tomakomai grain distillery is the supply-side anchor. Venture Whisky’s 2.4 million LPA Chichibu II grain distillery in Hokkaido is the single largest new capacity event of the 2025-2026 window.
  • Window for distressed-asset entry is open in 2026. Cask-fund secondary dislocation and stressed craft balance sheets create the most attractive entry economics since the 2018-2019 pre-boom window.
